Greeblies Ride Again!
August 13th, 2008 by Serenity RPG 101
After effectively shooting our wad two weeks ago with the Serenity “Big Picture”, it’s back to sweatin’ the small stuff here on the Firefly Ship Works. It’s going to be all greeblies, all the time, for the next little while. But at least this week’s close-up is focusing on a part of the ship we’ve seen very little of before (here or in the movie/show): The underside of the bridge.
The bridge underside has just tons of little details to capture. So much so, the sculptor has developed five discrete components to capture it all. It’s a pretty safe bet that in the final kit, these will all be combined.
As always, there’s almost too much detail in Zoic’s amazing wireframes – once we get starting capturing it, there seems to be no end to all the little stuff we want to add. Hopefully what we’ve ended up with here will be enough to satisfy even the hardest core Core-Techs out there:
We start with Zoic’s amazing Lightwave files to inform the sculpting process.
We then break the model part down into five components. Here’s the greeblie panel from the left side.
Here’s the greeblies for the right side.
Here’s the very tip of Serenity’s nose.
And the never-commented on (or seen) escape hatch.
Here it is, altogether. Take a look at the rendering above to see how we did.
One last thing before we sign-off: Wanted to send a special shoutout to the folks over at Pop Critic for their incredibly flattering write-up on the Firefly Ship Works. Any day we can come sandwiched between a story on a Jason and the Argonauts remake and J.J. Abrams, is certainly a good one!
